Whether you’re going for a new wardrobe or looking to renovate the existing one, choosing what kind of door is always the hardest decision to make, what’s ironic about it is that you only have to choose between sliding & hinged wardrobe doors. However, it’s important to assess these two options and come up with a logical decision on which one to choose. Space Clearance
Hinged doors are known to demand an ample amount of space clearance for it to open completely. Since they open outwards, you’ll need some space to make sure it opens fully. If there’s a dearth of space clearance for the doors, then it will warp or de-shape over time.
On the other hand, sliding doors don’t require any space clearance to open due to its sliding mechanism. That means it doesn’t have any space limitations nor does it need any extra space to open. Sliding wardrobe doors are known to add value by saving space.
Door Width Limits
When it comes to door width, both sliding & hinged wardrobe doors have their unique take. Hinged doors are supported on the vertical axis by hinges. That means the maximum limit for the door width is around 600 millimetres. Anything beyond this dimension will strain your door hinges, resulting in failure or breakage over time. To solve this problem, you need to divide your hinged doors into two shutter doors.
Sliding doors, on the other hand, runs on the horizontal axis on both sides. That means it can prevent the door from warping. Since it slides, the door can go beyond the 600 mm limit of hinged doors. At the same time, it can also be customised.
Plinth Clearance
Hinged wardrobe doors are installed above the skirting level. That’s why the door needs proper support from the frame all around. Sliding doors don’t require any plinth clearance. It can run on the floor by itself. That means it can make an additional 100 millimetres of space in the wardrobe.
At the end of the day, both sliding & hinged wardrobe doors have their upsides and downsides. Although you can say that sliding has the edge over hinged doors, there are certain applications wherein that isn’t entirely the case. So it’s all up to you.
